The heart of our community: Celebrating our volunteers at the Chilterns Neuro Centre
At the Chilterns Neuro Centre, we know that a strong community is built not just by the services we provide, but by the people who make those services possible. Our volunteers are the beating heart of our charity. They bring energy, compassion and invaluable support to everything we do. We simply couldn’t function without them.
Over 10,000 hours of kindness
Each year, over 80 regular volunteers generously give their time to the Centre, contributing more than 10,000 hours in total. From welcoming members at reception to supporting our therapeutic services, helping in the garden, or assisting with fundraising events, our volunteers are involved in every corner of Centre life.
“Volunteers are a lifeline for us,” says Cathy Garner, Volunteer Coordinator at the Chilterns Neuro Centre. “Their dedication enables us to offer more services, spend more quality time with our members and create a truly welcoming environment. They don’t just support us, they inspire us.”
Why volunteer?

Volunteering isn’t just a gift to the Centre. It’s a rewarding experience for those who choose to give their time. Many of our volunteers speak about the sense of community and personal growth they experience.
“My son was diagnosed with MS a number of years ago” says Susan, one of the incredible volunteers at the Centre. “At that time I was able to volunteer at fundraising events for the Centre in the evening and at weekends. The events are always fun and the money raised is so vital to facilitate the running of the Centre, making it a very good way to spend some of my time. More recently I volunteer on reception – a role I really enjoy. Getting to know the members and staff a little better has been a real pleasure.”
Whether someone has a few hours a week or can only help occasionally, every moment counts. Volunteering can also build confidence, improve wellbeing and provide a real sense of purpose.
The power of giving back
For people living with neurological conditions, small acts of kindness can mean the world. Our volunteers help create a space where members feel heard, seen, and supported.
“When you walk through the doors, the first person you often see is a volunteer,” says Richard Parkin, CEO at the Centre. “That warm welcome sets the tone for everything that follows. Volunteers shape our culture of care.”
