Your legacy will help us to continue our work and have a positive impact on someone affected by a neurological condition

Making provisions for your loved ones after you’ve gone is so important, knowing they will be taken care of even after you are gone. But did you know that you can also leave a gift to the Chilterns Neuro Centre in your Will? Leaving a donation to our charity could be the most important gift you’ll ever make and will ensure your legacy lives on, helping future generations of people with MS, Parkinson’s and stroke survivors to live life to the full.

This quote from one of our members explains why her mother decided to leave a gift to the Centre in her Will and the legacy she has since left behind.

“Throughout her life my mother had always valued the work that charities do and the difference they make to people’s lives. She was happy to support and donate to a huge range of different causes, whose work she particularly admired.

“I received my MS diagnosis in 1990 when I was 26 and I was referred to the Chilterns Neuro Centre for physio in 2015 by my MS nurse, who told me that otherwise I would be waiting for a long time to get treatment on the NHS. At the time I was working as a Clinical Head of Service at Milton Keynes Hospital but was struggling a bit with my walking and was at risk of having trips and falls. The support I received from the Centre improved my balance and mobility, and I felt much more safer and confident. I also attended the fatigue management course which helped me to manage my energy levels and I have had support from the Centre’s Occupational Therapist. All the treatments and Therapies, enabled me to stay in work for longer and maintain my ability to enjoy family life and leisure activities, and to contribute to their community where I lived.  Not only did this help to improve my physical health it also supported both my mental health and wellbeing.

“My mother could see the difference the help I received made to my life, and so she then started supporting the Centre in any way that she could. This included buying raffle tickets, making one off donations and also setting up a monthly standing order donation.

“Sadly my mother died in April 2023, but among the many legacies she leaves behind, she leaves a Centre that is more financially stable thanks to the gift she left in her will. She leaves a Centre that is better able to continue providing the treatments and therapies that I have benefitted from, to future generations.”

How to leave a gift in my will

If you would like to support the Chilterns Neuro Centre by leaving a gift in your Will for the charity then please talk to a solicitor. They will be able to advise the various ways you can do this and discuss which might work best for you.  You can do this if you already have a Will (by adding a codicil) or when you create a new Will.

Why not take advantage of the Centre’s ‘Make a Will Month‘ scheme which we run each year? Our partner solicitors for the month will donate their fees to us instead of charging you, so the Centre benefits from the administrative costs of the process.

What type of gift can I leave

There are normally three types of gifts you can leave in a Will – specific gifts, pecuniary gifts and residuary gifts.

  1. Specific Gifts: These are gifts of specific items, such as property, jewelry, artwork, or personal possessions. The Will should clearly describe the item and who it is intended for.
  2. Pecuniary Gifts: Pecuniary gifts are gifts of a specific amount of money. You would specify in the Will the exact amount you wish to gift to a particular person or organisation.
  3. Residuary Gifts: The residue of the estate is what remains after all debts, expenses, taxes, and specific and pecuniary gifts have been paid out. A residuary gift involves leaving a percentage or share of the residue to one or more beneficiaries.
