Art Challenge: Hockney Landscapes

The latest Art Challenge is Hockney Landscapes

It’s great that the Art Group has started back at the Centre and we hope that many more of you can experience it over the next few weeks.  Our latest challenge is art in the style of David Hockney.

David Hockney’s Style

David Hockney was part of the Pop Art movement, using bright bold colours, and Cubism, using areas of flatness. He was influenced by some of the old masters such as Matisse and Van Gogh, especially in the use of colours and line.  He breaks every rule deliberately, delighting in the deconstruction of proportion, perspective and colour theory. He uses areas of flatness, few shadows and patchwork landscapes.  Hockney was one of the first artists to make great use of Acrylics.  Being fast-drying it suited his technique of painting large areas of flat colour then adding details.

STARTER and ACTIVITIES TO TRY:

  • Start with some sketches of landscapes.  Use pencil to add lines and patterns
  • Refer to your sketch so you can pick out the main shapes which you can lightly draw on your art paper.
  • Begin to add colours – acrylics, undiluted watercolours or crayons
  • You could limit your palette to the 3 primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and white. Note how complementary colours work together (red next to green, yellow next to purple etc.)
  • Let this dry, then add contrasting lines, pattern and detail.

YOU WILL NEED SOME OF THESE THINGS:

Paper, Pencils, Pens, Watercolours or Acrylics, Crayons, brushes, palette.

If you have a little box for equipment and a place for art – it becomes easier to dip in and out of it, rather than setting up and collecting everything each time.

Enjoy being creative
